How to Do a Quick Sewer Line Check
Start by locating your main sewer clean out. This is typically found in your front yard, though it can sometimes be along the side of the house or near the foundation. Look for a 4-inch pipe capped with either a black or white lid, it usually sits just a few inches above ground level. In some older homes, it may be located inside near the base of a main drain stack, so check both inside and outside if you’re unsure.
Once you’ve found it, head inside and turn on multiple water sources simultaneously . A running sink combined with a shower or bathtub works great. Let them run for a couple of minutes to generate a solid flow of water through your drain system. Then head back outside and carefully remove the clean out cap to observe whether water is actively flowing through the line. Use caution when opening the cap, if there is already a significant clog, pressure may have built up behind it.
After observing the flow, go back inside and shut off all the water sources. Then watch the cleanout and time how long it takes for the water to fully drain and clear. Under normal conditions with no obstruction, the line should drain completely within a minute or two. If it takes longer than a few minutes to fully clear, that’s a red flag, there’s likely a partial or full obstruction somewhere in the main sewer line.
What to Do If You Suspect a Clog
Don’t ignore a slow drain, it rarely resolves on its own and will almost always get worse over time. If you’re handy, you can rent or purchase a drain cleaning machine (also called a drain snake or auger) to clear the obstruction yourself. However, if the water isn’t moving at all or you’re seeing sewage backing up into the house, it’s time to call a licensed plumber right away. A professional can also run a sewer camera through the line to pinpoint exactly where the blockage is and whether there are any underlying issues like root intrusion, pipe damage, or buildup that needs more than just a simple cleaning.
A little prevention now can save you thousands of dollars, and a whole lot of stress down the road.
